As the sun began to drop low in the sky, painting the rocky peaks of the surrounding mountains in a warm golden glow, a small group of people found themselves drawn to the hillside overlooking Athens for the end of another summer day. From their vantage point high above the city, they took in the breathtaking vista that was unfolding before them.
Below, the compact buildings of ancient Athens, constructed of stone and brick, nestled together along twisting alleyways. In the valley between the mountains, the shadows were growing long, but the last rays of sunlight gave an amber sheen to the scene. A calm stillness had settled over the city at this quiet twilight hour.
The people stayed to watch as the brightness faded from the sky and the first stars emerged. Though the air was cooling, a lingering warmth remained from the sun's parting beams. It had been a peaceful end to another beautiful day spent enjoying Greece's natural beauty.
